Quicktime 7 without iTunes

I tried to download quicktime 7 today from apple.com and noticed that the quicktime page only offers you the option of downloading the latest quicktime bundled with itunes. iTunes takes over file associations and media setting without asking which drives me crazy.

I’ve located a link to the quicktime standalone player:

http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html

I think that intentionally making it hard to download the standalone player for quicktime is a slimy thing to do, reminds me of the RealOne player a few years ago.

  1. Yep. I did this yesterday to watch the Doom trailer. It wasn’t too long ago when apple had the direct download posted in tiny text below the Buy now! button.

    Slimy is right.

  2. Worse than Slimey, I guess the ugly grey itunes is not so popular after all and quite a few applications
need Quicktime to work properly so they just take advantage of that.

  3. I don’t know what you’re whining about… the link for the standalone player is right there on the main page for QuickTime.

  4. When I wrote the post 5 months ago it wasn’t on the page. I think apple had a lot of complaints about it and decided to put the standalone link back on there.

Btw: The link posted in the comment above is the link I put in my original post.

  5. Yes, Apple disappointed me by using the same tactics as other uncivilized Internet companies, Real, Microsoft… The link for downloading Quicktime standalone isn’t there again. Shame on you, Apple.
