iPod won’t fast forward?

This morning our ipod mini suddenly stopped wanting to fast forward. To solve this I simply held down the select (center) button and the menu button together for 10 second. This causes the ipod to ‘reboot’ and after that the problem was solved. As a side note, clicking the select button while playing a song lets you fast forward and rewind with the scroll wheel, a definite plus when listening to hour long shows. Sometimes you just have to grit your teeth and read the manual. 😛

  1. WOW! I was having the exact same problem and I had no idea how to fix it. I just wanted to say thank you because if I hadn’t read your blog I probably would have had to take my iPod in somewhere to be fixed and that could have cost me! Once again, Thank you!

  2. Cody,

Thanks a ton for this post. My iPod was all whacked with this fastforward button and I could not figure it out for the life of me. I know you can press the middle wheel and fastforward that way, but for quick fast forwards it is much easier to just press and hold forward. Plus, I don’t want my iPod broken. So thanks, t this is great help.

  3. Seriously, that was an awesome fix! I hate not being able to scan inside a song. Thank you soooo much for the tip.

Anybody reading this with the problem, the 10 second reset REALLY does work!

  4. Awesome. I had forgotten about the reboot. That also works if your Ipod suddenly just goes blank and won’t come on.

  5. thanks for the tip… I just spent an hour sifting through articles on the iPod website trying to find out what was wrong and couldn’t find anything that would work… rebooting did the trick

  6. please help. i tried rebooting it, but
it still will not fast forward or go to the
next song when i press the button. i have no
idea what to do. & i thought this might work since it
worked for everyone else. but is there something
else to do, i dont know some other way you guys could help me with?? thanks

  7. Way to go!! I could only skip through 3 songs (why 3? I don’t know) and then it would begin skipping through song titles (about 1 sec each) without playing any of them. I would have to go back to a playlist and pick a song to get it going again. You’re method worked GREAT to fix the problem instantly!! Thanks

  8. AMAZING what you can find out on this damn internet. That was the exact fix I was looking for. That fix was posted February 28th, 2006 and it STILL helps now in 2011. Great people…. great people… those who care with great information!!! My Ipod was doing the same and BAM… it was fixed!!!! Steven

  9. Well I too am having this probem….will try this, hope it works for me too – Thanks for sharing!!

  10. Thank you!!!!
Mine wouldn’t skip to the next song.
    Does now!

  11. I’m having this problem too but your reboot solution hasn’t worked for me. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

  12. Did the ipod actually reboot? If it did and that did not fix it you may have a problem with your scroll wheel. I’ve had luck finding replacement ipod parts on http://www.ifixit.com. Good luck!
